QURGHON TEPPA, September 19, 2012, Asia-Plus — The Supreme Court has upheld the Khatlon regional court’s verdict against Nouriddin Nabotov, the deputy chief of the Qumsangir police department and Mahmad Sharipov, an operative agent with the anti-drug squad at the Qumsangir police department, Sharipov’s defense lawyer, Ms. Tatiana Umarova, told Asia-Plus in an interview on September 19.
We will recall that the Khatlon regional court sentenced Nouriddin Nabotov and Mahmad Sharipov to nine and twelve years in prison respectively on June 25 this year. The sentence followed their conviction on charges of fraud, illegal detention and drug trafficking.
“The Prosecutor-General’s has not agreed with verdict. Prosecutors have not agreed with the fact that the court re-qualified the charge of bribery. By the court’s ruling Nabotov and Sharipov were convicted on fraud,” the lawyer said.
The Khatlon prosecutor’s office instituted criminal proceedings against Nabotov and Sharipov last October. The preliminary investigation has reportedly established that they attempted to plant narcotics on a local entrepreneurs for the purpose of taking bribe from him.
