The Sughd regional court has upheld the Zafarobod district court’s verdict against local resident jailed for propagating ideas of the Islamic State (IS) terror group’s ideas.

The Sughd regional court rejected an appeal by Komiljon Usmonov, who got a lengthy jail term from propagating IS terror group’s ideas, on October 24, a source at the Sughd regional court told Asia-Plus in an interview.

In August this year, a court in the Zafarobod district sentenced local resident Komiljon Usmonov, 25, to 17 years in prison.

The sentence followed his conviction on charges of organizing activities of an extremist group (Article 307 of Tajikistan's Pena Code) and involving Tajik nationals in foreign armed conflicts (Article 401 of Tajikistan’s Penal Code).  Usmonov will serve his jail term in a high-security penal colony.

He was reportedly detained in May this year.

In a report released at a news conference in Khujand, Sughd governor Abdurahmon Qodiri revealed on January 19, 2017 that 322 residents of Sughd province are fighting alongside Islamic State (IS) militants in Syria.

39 of them traveled to Syria together with their families, Qodiri said, noting that 51 Sughd residents were killed in in Syria.

He further added that 51 residents of the province were currently fighting in Afghanistan and 73 others in Pakistan.
