Dismissal of Yodgor Fayzov from the post of the governor of the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) and appointment of Alisher Mirzonabot to this post has reportedly caused a lot of discussion. On the one hand, this reaction depended on Fayizov's popularity in the region and his independent actions, and from other hand, it was caused by the transfer of governance of the important region of the country to the security general.
It is especially important to know this in connection with fact that the president three years ago was dissatisfied with the security situation in the region and against the background of rumors about construction of Chinese military base in the region.
However, media and users of social networks’ attention was most drawn to the absence of any information about the new governor of the GBAO. Many attribute this to the fact that he is a general in the security service, and therefore, his bio data will not be published.
We tried to find out on our own.
According to information received from various sources, Alisher Mirzonabot was born and grew up in Rushan district of the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region.
He reportedly did his two-year military service in GBAO’s Murgab district. According to some sources, he served in a border unit commanded by Muhammadboqir Boqirov, former opposition field commander and currently one of informal leaders in the region.
According to other sources, he finished Suvorov military school in Dushanbe and graduated from the Border Guard Academy in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
He had served in various positions in the Border Guard Directorate at the State Committee for National Security (SCNS), from commander of a frontier post in Sughd province to commander of the Panj border unit in Khatlon province, which is the largest border unit in Tajikistan.
In September 2017, Colonel Alisher Mirzonabot was appointed deputy head of the State Committee for National Security. The same year, he rose to the rank of Major-General.
In October 2018, Alisher Mirzonabot was appointed the first deputy governor of the GBAO following president’s dissatisfaction with the work of the former provincial leadership.
In 2020, after presidential elections, Alisher Mirzonabot was relieved of his post of the first deputy governor of the GBAO and appointed the mayor of Khorog, the capital of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region. In this position, he worked for a year and on November 4, Alisher Mirzonabot was appointed acting governor of the GBAO.
