U.S. funded border guard outposts completed

DUSHANBE, November 7, 2012, Asia-Plus  — On Wednesday November 7, U.S. Ambassador to Tajikistan, Mrs. Susan M. Elliott, on behalf of the U.S. Embassy’s Office of Military Cooperation, handed over two Border Guard Outposts to Tajikistan’s Border Guards at an event attended by the Commander of the Border Guards, Lieutenant-General Sherali Mirzo.

According to the U.S. Embassy in Dushanbe, the Border Outposts were constructed at Rybkhoz and Sayod in the Hamadoni district and consist of barracks, dining facilities, administrative offices, officer housing, maintenance facilities, and dog kennels.

These outposts will enhance the readiness of Border Guard personnel in the Region to secure Tajikistan’s southern border against drug traffickers and other security threats.

Ambassador Elliott stated, “The Tajik Border Guards are a professional and dedicated element of Tajikistan’s security team.  It is my great privilege to support them in their valiant stand against narcotics trafficking and in securing their borders.”

She added that the construction of the outposts will significantly improve the Government of Tajikistan’s ability to monitor the border and helps sustain Border Guard activities in the Region.

This donation is one of the many assistance projects the U.S. Embassy has provided Tajikistan’s law enforcement agencies.  Since 1992, the American people have provided over $1 billion in programs and humanitarian aid that support Tajikistan’s democratic institutions, health care, security, education, and economic growth.
