Tajik man gets a lengthy jail term over Sapsan train bombing plot

A Tajik man has hot a lengthy jail term for orchestrating an attempted bombing of a high-speed train between Moscow and St. Petersburg.

A court in Moscow has sentenced Tajik citizen Emom Burhonov to twenty-two years in prison, Interfax reported on December 20.

The court reportedly found that Burhonov had played a role in derailing a Sapsan train in July 2017 by placing a metal device on the tracks to cause the train to crash into oncoming traffic.   Burhonov will serve his term in a high-security penal colony.

Burhonov was tried separately from seven other defendants who were sentenced between 15 and 21 years in prison in July this year.

A court in Russia has sentenced a Tajik man to 22 years in maximum-security prison for orchestrating an attempted bombing of a high-speed train between Moscow and St. Petersburg, Interfax reported Friday.

Recall, the attempted bombing of the high-speed train Sapsan occurred on July13, 2017.  The terrorists placed a metal object on the tracks in an attempt to cause the high-speed Sapsan train to derail and crash into oncoming traffic.  The train did not crash but five Sapsan carriages were reportedly damaged, resulting in estimated losses of 55 million rubles (880,000 USD).
