ISIS will no longer be a threat to Tajikistan and other Central Asia’s nations, says U.S. official

Over the last two days, productive talks have been held with heads of a number ministers and agencies, including the Foreign Ministry, the Interior Ministry, the State Committee for National Security (SCNS) and Border Troops, Ambassador Alice Wells, the US Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs, told reporters in Dushanbe on January 7.

According to her, they discussed a number of issues that could take relationships between the United States and Tajikistan to a new level, giving them a new impulse.

These are reportedly issues being of mutual interest, including expansion of cooperation in countering violent terrorism and extremism.

Concentration of militants of the ISIS terror group in Afghan provinces bordering Tajikistan still poses a threat; therefore, the US troops in Afghanistan don't stop decisive blows on them.

“This may guarantee that ISIS will no longer be a threat to Tajikistan and other countries of the region," Ambassador Wells noted.

She said that since 2002, the Government of the United States has provided about 200 million USD for strengthening the Tajik-Afghan border.

Over the last three years, the U.S. Department of State has provided 46 million USD for strengthening Tajikistan’s border, Ms. Well added.
