CSTO secretary-general says it is necessary to help Tajikistan contain potential threats

The Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) Secretary-General Stanislav Zas has stated the need to help Tajikistan contain potential threats.

The CSTO Secretariat notes that he said this yesterday at a meeting of the State Duma (Russia’s lower chamber of parliament) Committee on CIS Affairs, Eurasian Integration and Relations with Compatriots.

The CSTO secretary-general reportedly informed the Committee members about the situation in the East European, Caucasian and Central Asian regions of the CSTO collective security and outlined the threats emanating from the territory of Afghanistan.

Stanislav Zas stressed the need to assist Tajikistan in containing potential threats,” says a statement released by the CSTO Secretariat.

He reportedly also spoke about the activities of the Organization in the field of foreign policy coordination, military cooperation and addressing challenges and threats.

It is also noted that separately Zas informed the Committee members about the results of the peacekeeping operation in Kazakhstan. He said that there were no casualties among personnel, weapons and military equipment following its results.

The CSTO was formed shortly after the collapse of the Soviet Union but has gradually been expanding its capabilities.

Led by Russia, the CSTO now groups Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan.
