DUSHANBE, October 8, 2008, Asia-Plus — On Tuesday October 7, the UNDP CO Tajikistan handed over 1,000 tons of fuel oil to the Dushanbe heat and power station.
As it had been reported earlier, the UNDP Co Tajikistan is supposed to hand over 3,000 tons of fuel oil to the station. The source at the UNDP Dushanbe Office said that the remaining 2,000 tons of fuel oil would be handed over to the Dushanbe heat and power station before the end of October.
The fuel oil handed over to the Dushanbe head and power station by the UNDP CO Tajikistan is expected to increase heating through the central heating system that would decrease the demand for electricity for heating in the areas served by the system, and also increase the overall electrical supply for heating in areas not served by the central heating system.
It is to be noted that fuel oil provided by the UNDP Co Tajikistan comes very opportunely as during this heating season, the Dushanbe heat and power station will work only on fuel oil because natural-gas prices are too high. We will recall that speaking in an interview with Asia-Plus, Rahmatullo Qalandarov, engineer-in-chief with the station, said on September 26 that they had stockpiled more than 10 tons of fuel oil so far and some 60 train cars with fuel oil from Iran and Turkmenistan are en route to Tajikistan.
According to Qalandarov, repairs to the Dushanbe power and heat station are under way and expected to be finished in mid-October. Once rehabilitated, the Dushanbe power and heat station is expected to generate 180,000 kWh of electrical power and 270 gigacalories of heat per hour, the engineer-in-chief said.
Constructed in 1968, the Dushanbe power, with capacity of 198 megawatt, works on natural gas and use fuel oil as reserve fuel.
