DUSHANBE, July 9, 2013, Asia-Plus — The Islamic Revival Party of Tajikistan (IRP) is ready to head the opposition forces of the country for participation in the upcoming presidential election if there is no worthy candidate for president.
According to IRP’s head office in Dushanbe, IRP leader Muhiddin Kabiri stated this in Moscow at the end of last week.
“If we are sure that the election will be fair and held in accordance with the country’s legislation and in accordance with logical principles of political struggle, we have nothing to fear,” Kabiri was quoted as saying.
“We do not want the upcoming presidential election to divide our society and our people to be broken up into Islamists and secularists,” Kabiri said. According to him, the winner of the presidential election should not rely only his party.
“In our opinion, the winner’s team should consist of 40 percent fellow party members and 60 percent representatives of business circles and technocrats,” IRP leader stressed.
Founded in October 1990, the Islamic Revival Party of Tajikistan was registered on December 4, 1991. It was banned by the Supreme Court in June 1993 and legalized in August 1999. Its official newspaper is
Najot
(Salvation). According to some sources, IRP now has some 50,000 members. It won two seats in the 2010 parliamentary elections. The Islamic Revival Party of Tajikistan is the only Islamic party registered in CIS Central Asia.
