Dushanbe. 23 August. “Asia-Plus” – UN News Center reports that General Secretary of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, opened the organization’s section in the National Library in the frame of her visit to Tajikistan.

Ms. Bokova also visited the Tajik National Park, which has been included into the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Her visit to Tajikistan was timed for the 20th anniversary of the country’s membership in UNESCO. She also participated in the high level International Conference on Water Cooperation, held in Dushanbe on 20-21 August.

UNESCO General Secretary participated in the opening of the Conference, met with the President of Tajikistan, Emamali Rahman, with the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Culture.

UNESCO General Secretary left Tajikistan for a two day official visit to Kazakhstan.

The nine-story building of the National Library of Tajikistan, whose form reminds an open book, was opened on March 20 last year.

Pamir Mountains National Bank of Tajikistan was included into the UNESCO World Heritage List on 21 June of this year.

Pamir Mountains has an area of 2.5 million hectares and is located in the eastern part of Tajikistan, in the center of the so-called “Pamir Mountain Site” from which the highest mountain ranges in Eurasia diverge.
