DUSHANBE, March 20, 2014, Asia-Plus — Leader of a terrorist group, Alimurod Makhanov, has got a jail term of 21 years.

The Supreme Court of Tajikistan sentenced Alimurod Makhanov to 21 years in prison on March 20.

“Other members of this organized crime group were sentenced to different jail terms,” said a source at the Supreme Court.  “Amirali Davlatov was sentenced to 19 years in prison, Kenja Abdulhaqov got a jail term of 15 years, Siroj Qarayev was sentenced to 11 years in jail, and Sorbon Komilov was sentenced to 2 years in prison.”

We will recall that the Interior Ministry’s press service released a statement on September 21, 2013 saying that six terrorists who were preparing to carry out attacks in Dushanbe have been captured.

The leader of the group has been identified as Alimurod Makhanov, who underwent training in terrorist camps in Pakistan.

On September 24, 2013, Alimurod Makhanov was shown on state television.  He said they had planned to blow up several buildings, including buildings of the Ministry of Interior (MoI) and the State Committee for National Security (SCNS), as well as four gates to Dushanbe in order to disrupt the presidential elections scheduled for November 6, 2013.

Alimurod Makhanov, 29, who is also known under the nickname “Ustod”, said that he joined the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU) in 2011 and he headed the terrorist group numbering eight persons.  Among them were citizens of Tajikistan, Turkey, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan.
