DUSHANBE, July 30, 2008, Asia-Plus  — The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the Government of the Netherlands will provide $4 million each for improvement of the Dushanbe solid waste management system. 

A loan agreement on ensuring guarantees for the EBRD–supported Dushanbe solid waste management project was signed by the EBRD, Dushanbe Mayor’s Office and the Ministry of Finance (MoH) in Dushanbe on July 29.  

According to the EBRD Dushanbe Office, the Bank will provide $4 million in loan for improvement of the solid waste management system in the Tajik capital.  Besides, the Government of the Netherlands will also support the project through providing an investment grant of $4 million.  

The project provides for working out a sustainable program for management of solid waste and financing main directions on improvement of a system of transportation of solid waste and rehabilitation of the existing landfill. 

The proposed EBRD transaction focused on financing compacting trucks, container trucks, rehabilitation of collection points, containers, tanker trucks, landfill weighbridge, entrance office, workshop, garage, landfill equipment, upgrading of the access road, landfill soil cover, gas extraction system, a leachate collection and treatment system, and monitoring equipment.  In parallel with the investments, the operation assists to restructure and reorganize the institutional framework for solid waste services in Dushanbe and contributes to the formation and institutional strengthening of a newly formed solid waste management company for Dushanbe.
