DUSHANBE, January 22, 2015, Asia-Plus — A delegation of Tajikistan’s lower house (Majlisi Namoyandagon) of parliament led by the Majlisi Namoyandagon deputy speaker Mirgand Shabozov participated in the 10th session of the Parliamentary Union of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Member States that took place in Istanbul, Turkey on January 21-22.

In a statement delivered at the session, Mr. Shabozov noted on January 21 that taking into consideration events that are taking place in the world as a whole and in Islamic countries in particular and leading to death of innocent people, progressive mankind must take adequate measures, according to Muhammadato Sultonov, a spokesman for the Majlisi Namoyandagon.

Tajik parliament deputy speaker reportedly said that Islam’s influence is growing both in terms of politics and economics “but some advanced countries are resisting this obvious reality; one can see that with half an eye.”

“Therefore, we must take efforts to ease this tense situation and call on Islamic society to be more reasonable and tolerant and not to succumb to provocative acts taking place in the world,” Shabozov said.

We will recall that the delegation members include deputies of the Majlisi Namoyandagon Ziyoratsho Sadullo and Barakatullo Atokhoja.

The 9th session of the Parliamentary Union of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation Member States was hosted by Iran in 2014.

The Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC is composed of the parliaments of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member states.  It was established in Iran on June 17, 1999, with its head office situated in Tehran.

Established on the initiative of the Islamic Parliament of Iran, the PUIC reportedly seeks to strengthen parliamentary cooperation among Islamic countries in order to find solution for the challenges facing the Islamic world through parliamentary approaches.

The first Secretary General was Egyptian diplomat, Mr. Ibrahim Ahmed Auf, who served for two terms from March 1, 2000 to April 30, 2008.  On May 1, 2008, Dr. Mahmoud Erol Kilic from Turkey was appointed as the second Secretary General.

The PUIC has six standing committees: Standing Committee on Information and Cultural Affairs (COMIAC); Standing Committee on Economic and Commercial Cooperation (COMCEC); Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH); Islamic Committee for Economic, Cultural and Social Affairs; Permanent Finance Committee; and Financial Control Organ.
