427 international election observers reportedly registered with CCER to date

DUSHANBE, February 20, 2015, Asia-Plus — To-date, 427 representatives of the OSCE”s Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), the CIS Inter-Parliamentary Assembly, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), the CIS and separate countries have been officially registered with the Central Commission for Elections and Referenda (CCER) as international observers, Abdumannon Dodozoda, the head of the CCER’s office, told Asia-Plus in an interview.

In all, more than 500 representatives of regional, international organizations and separate countries will monitor the upcoming parliamentary elections in Tajikistan as international observers.

Meanwhile, the head of the staff of the CIS election observation mission, Yevgeniy Sloboda, is expected to meet with the CCER head, Shermuhammad Shohiyon, today.

“Shohiyon will brief Sloboda on measures taken by the Tajik authorities to ensure transparency of the upcoming parliamentary elections in the country,” Dodozoda said.

The 2015 parliamentary elections in Tajikistan will take place on March 1, 2015.

Tajikistan’s Parliament (Majlisi Oli) has two chambers: the Assembly of Representatives (Majlisi Namoyandagon) and the National Assembly (Majlisi Milli).  Majlisi Namoyandagon has 63 members, elected for a five-year term in, 22 by proportional representation (party list) and 41 in single-seat constituencies.  Majlisi Milli has 33 members, 25 elected for a five-year term by local legislature (majlis) members and eight appointed by the president.
