DUSHANBE, April 28, 2015, Asia-Plus – The Tajik national currency, the somoni (TJS), continues depreciating against the dollar (USD).

The somoni has lost 3 percent of its value against the dollar since April 17 when operations of private currency-exchange points were suspended in Tajikistan.

According to the National Bank of Tajikistan (NBT), an average market buying rate (the buying rate is the rate at which money dealers buy foreign currency) of USD against TJS rose from 1:6.33 on April 17 to 1:6.50 on April 28.

Tajik central bank notes that the highest market buying rate between USD and TJS has been reported in Dushanbe and Khujand – 1:6.52.

In Dushanbe, the market buying exchange rate between USD and TJS rose from 1:6.33 on April 17 to 1:6.52 on April 28.

In Khujand, the capital of Sughd province the market buying exchange rate between USD and TJS from 1:6.33 on April 17 to 1:6.52 on April 28.

In Qurghon Teppa, the capital of Khatlon province the market buying exchange rate between USD and TJS from 1:6.33 on April 17 to 1:6.48 on April 28.

In Kulob (Khatlon province), the market buying exchange rate between USD and TJS from 1:6.33 on April 17 to 1:6.48 on April 28.

In Khorog, the capital of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO), the market buying exchange rate between USD and TJS from 1:6.25 on April 17 to 1:6.40 on April 28.

Meanwhile, an official exchange rate between USD and TJS set by the National Bank of Tajikistan rose from 1:6.0738 on April 17 to 1:6.2331 on April 28.

We will recall that Tajik central bank suspended operations of currency-exchange points belonging to physical entities in the country on April 17.  The blanket ban on private exchange offices means more than half of the country’s exchange offices – 818 out of a total 1,581 – are being shuttered, leaving 763 operating.
