DUSHANBE, April 18, Asia-Plus  — Tajikistan’s Customs Service chief Gurez Zaripov told a press conference in Dushanbe on April 17 that some 1,000 right-hand drive (RHD) vehicles are expected to be delivered to the country soon.

According to him, these cars were purchased abroad before adoption of amendments to the country’s vehicular traffic legislation banning the RHD cars in the country.  Zaripov noted that the  first 500 RHD cars of this consignment will be delivered to the country within the next few days.

The customs service chief stressed that import of the RHD cars into the country had not been banned but limited.  According to him, the RHD vehicles may be delivered to the country but the car-owners should have their steering columns changed from the right to left.

According to the customs service, some 5,000 RHD cars have been delivered to the country over past several years.

We will recall that a ban on right-hand drive vehicles came into effect in Tajikistan on April 1, 2008.
