DUSHANBE, March 19, Asia-Plus  — The Social-Democratic Party (SDPT) intends to hold a scientific-practical conference in Dushanbe on April 19 to discuss problems of pluralism in Tajikistan, the SDPT leader Rahmatillo Zoirov said in an interview with Asia-Plus.

According to him, the conference formally titled “Multi-party System in Tajikistan: State, Problems, Tendencies and Prospects of Formation and Development” aims to study actual state of the multi-party system in Tajikistan.

“Although eight officially registered political parties currently function in Tajikistan, but actually the president and the government provide domination of ruling People’s Democratic Party and allegiance of a number of pro-government parties to it,” Zoirov said.

He noted that by holding the conference the SDPT calls on all those interested, including political parties, government, parliament, media and citizens, to decide “on the future benchmarks of the multi-party system in the country.”

The conference is scheduled to discuss the following themes: the multi-party system as political foundation of formation of civil society in Tajikistan; stages and tendencies of formation of the multi-party system in the country; the problem of lack of state support for formation and development of political pluralism in Tajikistan; role of parliament, government and media in development of the multi-party system in Tajikistan; state and prospects of institutionalization of parties in Tajikistan; and Tajik experience of opposition activity.
