DUSHANBE, May 5, 2016, Asia-Plus – Japan has signed grant agreement on the project for improvement of equipment for road maintenance in Sughd province and the eastern part of Khatlon province.

The grant agreement was signed on April 25 by Mr. Ishii Kiyoshi, JICA Tajikistan Office Resident Representative and Mr. Sirojiddin Aslov, Foreign Minister of Tajikistan based on the Exchange of Notes between Japan’s Embassy in Dushanbe and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan that took place on March 3, 2016 on the implementation of the said project.

JICA Tajikistan says that under this Project, the Government of Japan extends 1.992 billion Japanese Yen to the Government of Tajikistan, through JICA, for the installation of asphalt plant and provision of equipment for road maintenance such as road roller, vibration compactor, asphalt finisher and etc.  This will allow the Road Maintenance Departments to properly maintain roads in their jurisdictions, thereby contributing to more efficient transportation throughout Tajikistan and surrounding areas.

By providing equipment improvements, this project will further road repair efforts, such as overlay work and pothole repair, by the Road Maintenance Departments, and enable proper maintenance of the road network in the target region. It is expected that this will improve the flow of goods by ensuring road possibility even during disasters and in the winter season, and by making road conditions better for travel.

JICA has completed “The Project for Improvement for Road Maintenance in Khatlon Region and Districts of Republican Subordination” and provided road maintenance equipment along with asphalt plants to Qurghon Teppa and Hisor SETMs in 2014.

In parallel, since 2013 Technical Cooperation “Project for Improvement of Capacity for Road Maintenance” has been implemented to improve the ability and efficiency in road maintenance of these regions.  For this time in response to expanded improvement in equipment for road maintenance to Sughd and Kulob regions, targeted areas for Technical Cooperation are broadened to these regions, JICA Tajikistan said.
