President Rahmon says relations with Iran one of priorities of Tajikistan’s foreign policy

DUSHANBE, December 12, Asia-Plus  — A broad range of issues related to bilateral cooperation between Tajikistan and Iran were discussed at a meeting of President Emomali Rahmon, who was on official visit to Turkmenistan, with Iranian foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki, who was also visiting Turkmenistan, in Ashgabat on Monday, Tajik presidential press service said.   

In the course of the talks President Rahmon stressed that “comprehensive expansion of cooperation with Iran has been and remains and one of priorities of foreign policy of Tajikistan.”   

The two also expressed satisfaction with a progress of construction of the Sangtuda-2 hydropower plant, Anzob tunnel equipment and construction of access roads to the site of the Chormaghzak tunnel in Tajikistan. 

Rahmon and Mottaki also exchanged views on international and regional issue being of mutual interest, including, joint support for post-war reconstruction of Afghanistan’s economy.   

We will recall that IRNA reported on December 10 that the Iranian minister and President Rahmon had discussed quadrilateral cooperation between Iran, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Afghanistan and the Shanghai Organization.  The two also exchanged views on the issue of Iran”s membership to the organization.
