Mudflows will occur in some areas.

Shirin Rahmanova, Asia+

May in Tajikistan is forecasted to be warm, but there will also be precipitation: rain, occasional hail, thunderstorms, and increased wind. Dust storms are also expected, the country’s Hydrometeorology Center (Hydromet) reports.

Khatlon province and plain areas subordinate to the center

The average monthly air temperature is expected to be 1°C-3°C above the climatic norm, and will be: in the plain areas 22°C-28°Cwarmth, and in the foothills – 18°C-21°C warmth.

The temperature will fluctuate throughout the month: in the plain areas at night from 15°C-20°C to 22°C-27°C warmth, during the day from 27°C-32°C to 33°C-38°C warmth, on certain days in some southern areas up to 40°C-42°C warmth, in the foothill areas at night from 11°C-16°C to 14°C-19°C warmth, and during the day from 20°C-25°C to 28°C-33°C warmth.

Throughout the month, variable cloudiness is expected, sometimes rain, occasional hail, thunderstorms, dust haze, and increased western wind up to 17-22 m/s.

Sughd province

In this region of the country, the air temperature will also be 1°C-2°C above the climatic norm, and will be: in the plains 22°C-24°C warmth, and in the mountains – 11°C-14°C warmth.

Throughout the month, temperature fluctuations are expected: in the plain areas at night from 12°C-17°C to 18-23°C warmth, during the day from 27°C-32°C to 33°C-38°C warmth. In the mountains at night from 4°C-9°C to 9°C-14°C warmth, and during the day from 19°C-24°C to 23°C-28°C warmth.

Precipitation will also occur in Sughd: variable cloudiness, rain, occasional hail, thunderstorms, dust haze, and increased western wind up to 17-22 m/s.

Western part of GBAO and mountainous areas subordinate to the center

The average monthly air temperature in the western part of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) and mountainous areas subordinate to the center will be 1°C-2°C above the climatic norm, and will be 13°C-18°C. Throughout the month, it will fluctuate: at night from 4°C-9°C to 10°C-15°C warmth, occasionally up to 16°C-21°C warmth, during the day from 19°C-24°C to 25°C-30°C warmth, occasionally up to 33°C-35°C warmth.

Throughout the month, variable cloudiness is expected, sometimes rain, occasional hail, thunderstorms, dust haze, and increased western wind up to 15-20 m/s.

Eastern part of GBAO

The average monthly air temperature in this area is expected to be 1°C-2°C above the climatic norm, and will be 2°C-7°C warmth. At night, it will range from 0°C-5°C below zero to 1°C-6°C warmth, during the day from 7°C-12°C to 14°C-19°C warmth.

Throughout the month, variable cloudiness is expected, sometimes rain, snow, and occasional increased western wind up to 15-20 m/s.

Expected mudflows and air pollution

Moreover, Hydromet warns of local mudflow events in early May due to precipitation in the foothill and mountainous areas subordinate to the center and certain areas of Khatlon province.

Additionally, on May 1 and 2 in the southern and central cities and areas of Khatlon province, in some distircts subordinate to the center and in Dushanbe, as well as on May 2 and 3 in the east of GBAO, due to the dust storm and haze coming from the southwest and northwest, an increase in atmospheric air pollution levels with suspended particles PM-10 and PM-2.5 is expected.

Citizens are advised to take precautionary measures.
