Tajik national who served a 6-year jail term in Russia gets a jail term of 16 years in homeland

Date:

A Tajik national who served a 6-year-jail term in Russian for drug smuggling has been detained upon his arrival in Dushanbe.

A court in the Tajik northern city of Khujand has sentenced Adbduvohid Sharipov, 34, the resident of Obburdon jamoat in the Mastchoh district (Sughd province), to 16 years in prison.

The sentenced reportedly followed his conviction on charges of the large-scale drug smuggling.  Sharipov will serve his term in a high-security penal colony.

Judge Eraj Alizoda, who presided over the trial, says Sharipov was sentenced to 6 years in prison in Russia in 2010.

“Five kilograms of narcotic drug were confiscated from him in Russia,” said the judge.  “Meanwhile, he has been wanted by Tajik police since 2009 for the large-scale drug smuggling.  54 kilograms of narcotic drug were found hidden in his house in 2009 but he managed to flee to Russia.”

According to him Sharipov was detained at the Dushanbe airport early this year.
