Trapped people rescued, says MoTC official

DUSHANBE, January 15, Asia-Plus  — Some 90 cars trapped in a series of avalanches that blocked in some places the highway from Dushanbe to Khujand on January 11 have been reelased from snow captivity, Asia-plus has learned from Qurbonkhon Saidov, head of the safety supervision department of the Ministry of transport and Communications (MoTC).

According to him, the cars have been caught in avalanches on the mountain road for four days.  Bulldozers and other special machines of the ministry were involved in clearing the road, and the services of Iranian and Chinese builders were also enlisted.

“People released from the snow captivity are in good condition,” Saidov said.

Traffic police officers say storms dumped up to 2 meters of snow in some areas.  They advise people to refrain from making unnecessary travels.

According to the Tajik meteorological services, clod weather snowfalls are expected to continue in the country until January 20.
