St. Petersburg reportedly ready to receive 50,000 migrant workers from Tajikistan and Uzbekistan

Date:

St. Petersburg is expected to receive 50,000 migrant workers from Tajikistan and Uzbekistan this year.

The labor migrants will be preliminary selected  by special centers in Uzbekistan and Tajikistan on request of employers, Dmitry Chernenko, the head of the St. Petersburg Committee on Labor and Employment of Population, told Vedomosti in an interview.

The first group numbering several hundreds of shiftmen, plasterers, bricklayers and house painters from the Uzbek Samarqand has already arrive in St. Petersburg, says Ferghana.ru.  They were reportedly selected by the pre-departure training center.

This center has reportedly been opened in Samarqand under a government-to-government agreement signed between Russia and Uzbekistan in late 2017.

Similar centers on organized recruitment of migrant workers have operated in Tajikistan since 2015.
