Working meeting presided over by President Rahmon discusses establishment of free economic zones in Tajikistan

DUSHANBE, August 20, Asia-Plus — An August 20 working meeting of the government presided over by President Emomali Rahmon discussed issues related to establishment of free economic zones in Tajikistan, presidential press service reported.

Prime Minister Oqil Oqilov and heads of a number of relevant ministries and organizations as well as senior representatives from president’s office took part at the session.  

During the meeting it was noted that in 2004-2005, Tajikistan projected and adopted law and regulations on free economic zones (FEZs), and local authorities of Gorno Badakhshan, Khatlon and Sughd provinces had been tasked to offer places for FEZs.   

Telling the meeting, the head of state expressed dissatisfaction with a slow progress of work and set concrete tasks on removing existing shortcomings, according to presidential press service.  The president demanded at the meeting that urgent measures should be taken to prepare legal documents and conduct feasibility study for establishing FEZs in the country.    

Rahmon also pointed to the necessity of speeding up work on rehabilitating the Dushanbe and Yovon cogeneration plants and stocking up enough amount of fuel and foodstuffs for winter, etc.
