DUSHANBE, July 31, Asia-Plus – RIA Novosti – A counternarcotics squad has seized about 20 kg of heroin on a major highway in the Chelyabinsk region, South Urals, a narcotics police spokesman said Tuesday.
Police stopped a Chevrolet Lanos and a Mercedes-Benz, and on inspecting the vehicles, found and confiscated 20 kg of heroin, or about 800,000 single hits of the drug, with a street value of over $1 million.
The two drivers and six passengers of the cars were detained, and will be charged with producing, possessing, transporting and distributing drugs. The suspects face up to ten years in prison.
Drug police officers also detained a Tajik national on charges of smuggling large quantities of drugs from Afghanistan to the Sverdlovsk region and reselling it in other parts of Russia, including Moscow, St. Petersburg and the Samara region.
