PDPT wins July 8 parliamentary by-elections

DUSHANBE, July 9, Asia-Plus — Member of Tajikistan’s ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDPT) has won a July 8 parliamentary by-election in Bokhtar constituency # 27 in the Khatlon province, according to the Central Commission for Elections and Referenda (CCER).

Muhibullo Dodojonov, a spokesman for the CCER, said that the PDPT member Amirbek Mahmadaliyev, who is deputy head of the Khatlon agriculture directorate, had won with 94 percent of the vote, while his opponents Abdusalom Mirzoyev of the Agrarian Party (APT), and the self-propelled candidate Tesha Afghnonov had garnered just 5 percent and 0.6 percent of the vote respectively.

According to Dodojonov, the Bokhtar constituency numbers 70,826 voters.  “69,756 voters came to ballot-boxes yesterday,” said the CCER spokesman,” Of them, 65,756 people or 94 percent voted for the PDPT candidate, 3,466 people or 5 percent voted for the APT candidate and only 413 people voted for the self-propelled candidate.”   

We will recall that the PDPT members have also won in three April 1 and two may 20 parliamentary by-elections.  The People”s Democratic Party of Tajikistan is the biggest political party in Tajikistan.  Its chairman is President Emomali Rahmon.  The PDPT now controls some 73 percent of seats in the lower house (Majlisi Namoyandagon) of the Tajik parliament, wining 46 of 63 seats.
