Mayor of the southern city of Kulob, Bahrom Inoyatzoda, has been arrested on suspicion of corruption.

The public relations center of the State Committee for National Security (SCNS) says Bahrom Inoyatzoda was arrested on June 8.  His driver Khursandali Khurramov was detained on May 27 and head of mayor’s office Firouz Qurbonov was detained on June 3.

Khurramov and Qurbonov reportedly said during the preliminary investigation that they had committed corrupt crimes at the direction of the Kulob mayor.

Besides, a number of Kulob residents have submitted applications on corrupt actions of the Kulob mayor to local law enforcement authorities and some those applications have been confirmed, the SCNS public relations center said.

Criminal proceedings have been instituted and an investigation is under way.

By president’s decree Bahrom Inoyatzoda had served as Mayor of Kulob since May 6, 2019.  Prior to this, he had served as mayor of the northern city of Istaravshan since 2017.  From 2014 to 2017, Inoyatzoda served as deputy governor of the Khatlon province.  From 2008 to 2014, he served as the head of the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning at the Committee for Architecture and Construction under the Government of Tajikistan.

Bahrom Inoyatzoda was born in the city of Kulob in 1960.  He graduated from the Faculty of Architecture at the Tajik Polytechnic Institute (currently Tajik technic University) in 1983.

Inoyatzoda is married with four children.  In 2012, he was awarded the medal “Khizmati Shoista” (For Worthy Merits).
