The Aga Khan Lycée (AKL) is dedicated to the development of pre-primary education for all children.
According to the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), the Early Childhood Development program (ECD) at AKL currently enrolls over 80 children of ages 3 to 5 years, in a half-day program. It reportedly focuses on best (researched) practices to nurture a caring and stimulating environment for children of pre-primary age, including supporting the use of mother tongue, as well as, Tajik and English languages.
The Aga Khan Lycée and the Aga Khan Education Services (AKES) work closely with its sister AKDN agencies, such as the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) and the Aga Khan Health Services (AKHS), and partners with the regional government of GBAO, to support pre-primary quality education access from birth to six years, through various direct and indirect provision models.
These include AKES pre-primary to Grade 11 schools, AKES standalone Pre-primary units, as well as government-based ECD centers within Government Schools, government kindergartens, remote rural Government ECD programs, and Care for Child Development Program.
Indirect support includes, ECD teacher training, working with pre-natal and post-natal maternal health programs, providing learning resources, and renovating classrooms.
The Aga Khan Lycée (AKL), Khorog, part of the Aga Khan Education Services, was established in September 1998 on the premises of the former School #3 (named after Kirov), a school with a distinguished history in the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region. The majority of students are from Khorog, and some from even more remote districts of GBAO and with a few students from other countries.
The Aga Khan Lycée, similar to Aga Khan Schools around the world, strives to create a harmonious balance between academic demands, sporting and cultural activities and community life. It challenges its students to be intellectually inquisitive and socially conscious. The Lycée believes that while what students know is important, the true measure of a student’s education is the ability to analyze what they do not know.
Currently operating more than 200 schools and educational programs, the Aga Khan Education Service (AKES) provides quality pre-school, primary and secondary education services to students in Africa, Asia and the Middle East.
Established in Tajikistan in 1995, the Aga Khan Education Services seeks to address challenges facing Tajikistan’s education system, including an exodus of teaching talent and a decline in government funding following the collapse of the Soviet Union, by directly participating in the education processes, facilitating the professional training of teachers, strengthening existing schools and providing scholarships.
