DUSHANBE, January 23, Asia-Plus – 36 crimes related to car hijacking were registered in Tajikistan in 2006, which is seven cases fewer than in the previous year of 2005, Major Bahrullo Jurayev, an official with the Tajik traffic police administration, said in an interview with Asia-Plus.

The traffic police official noted that 91.6 percent of the car-hijacking crimes registered last year were solved.

According to Jurayev, last year, the most frequently hijacked cars were western type cars such as Mercedes and Opel and Russian type car VAZ-2106.

The officer noted that car owners should try to use a secure paid park.   Such car parks usually have good lighting, a secure perimeter and security patrols.  Jurayev stressed that no car was hijacked from the authorized parks last year.

Most cars have radio/stereo cassette or CD players, and some are very expensive.  It is inevitable that such items are attractive to thieves, according to him.  To avoid such thefts there ought not to use a free but insecure park.
