Crime rate decreasing in Tajikistan

DUSHANBE, September 16, 2008, Asia-Plus  — In January-August 2008, 7,928 crimes have been reported in Tajikistan, which is 4.5 percent fewer than in the same period of last year, according to the State Committee for Statistics.  These figures are based on data from the Ministry of Interior (MoI). 

1,679 serious crimes have been registered in the country over the report period, which is 5.6 percent or 99 cases fewer than in January-August 2007.  The number of crimes committed by minors decreased from 457 registered in January-August 2007 to 289 cases reported in January-August 2008. 

The crime diction rate for report period has been 81.2 percent.  In January-August 2007, the crime detection rate was 80.3 percent.      

In the meantime, the crime rate has increased in some regions over the same eight-month period.  Thus, in the Khatlon province, the number of crimes rose 7.7 percent in the year to September 1, 2008, reaching 1,744. 

The crime rate has increased in some districts subordinate to the center (RRPs) as well.  In the Jirgatol district, the number of crimes has increased from 15 cases for January-August 2007 to 20, in the city of Roghun from 24 to 37 cases and in the Fayzobod district from 41 to 58 cases.   

Speaking in an interview with Asia-Plus, chief of the MoI analytical department, Lieutenant-Colonel Ramazon Ramazonov, attributed reduction of crimes to preventive events held by the ministry.
