Zurich tops the 2024 global ranking of cities for expatriates' quality of life, while Dushanbe ranked 216th out of 241 cities, according to Mercer’s city rankings.

Among Central Asian cities, Dushanbe trails Almaty (179th), Astana (186th), Tashkent (200th), and Bishkek (212th), while Ashgabat ranks 222nd.

This year's top-ranked city, Zurich, was praised for its “outstanding public services, low crime rates, vibrant cultural scene, effective infrastructure, and commitment to sustainability.”  The city also improved its global connectivity in 2024, adding more international flights.

Last year’s leader, Austria’s capital, Vienna, dropped to second place, while Geneva, Switzerland, took third.

In Asia, Singapore ranked highest at 30th and was the only Asian city in the top 50.

In the Middle East, Dubai ranked 83rd, followed by Abu Dhabi at 85th.

At the bottom of the list were Baghdad (Iraq), Bangui (Central African Republic), and Khartoum (Sudan).

What influences the rankings?

Mercer’s city rankings consider factors such as political stability, healthcare, education, infrastructure, and socio-cultural environment.  Alongside quality of life, cost of living plays a significant role in a city's appeal to expatriates and corporations.

"In the age of digital nomads and flexible work, cities and countries are continuously striving to attract international companies, talent, and remote workers," Mercer stated.

The ranking highlights cities with exceptional living standards, reliable infrastructure, and vibrant cultural life.  According to the report, cities that adapt and prioritize quality of life will determine their future status on the global stage.
