Tajikistan’s anticorruption agency names the most corrupt sectors

The greatest financial damage in the past year was identified within the structures of the country's Ministry of Defense, amounting to 122.7 million somonis, the Director of the Agency for State Financial Control and Combating Corruption under the President of Tajikistan, Sulaimon Sultonzada, announced at a news conference in Dushanbe on February 14.

According to him, in 2024, the anticorruption agency uncovered financial losses totaling 425.7 million somonis, of which 411.9 million somonis were recovered and returned to the state budget.

He reported that 2,323 corruption-related crimes were detected over the year, with investigations completed and cases sent to a court in 728 instances.

According to Sultonzada, corruption offenses were most frequently committed by:

  • Employees of local executive authorities – 257 crimes;
  • Workers in the education and science sector – 172 crimes;
  • Employees of the Ministry of Defense – 171 crimes;

 

Additionally, 1,711 administrative offenses related to corruption were registered last year.

In the annual Corruption Perceptions Index for 2024, Tajikistan scored 19 points, marking a decrease of 1 point compared to the previous year, ranking 164th out of 180 countries.
