Tajikistan and South Korea to boost economic ties through coordination meetings

The first coordination meeting between Tajikistan and the Republic of Korea (South Korea) was held in Dushanbe on May 7, according to the press service of the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of Tajikistan (MoEDT).

The meeting was chaired by Zavqi Zavqizoda, Tajikistan’s Minister of Economic Development and Trade, and Jeong Seung Sik, South Korea’s Ambassador to Tajikistan.

Participants reportedly included representatives from relevant ministries and agencies of Tajikistan, as well as officials from the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).

Speaking at the meeting, Zavqizoda described South Korea as a reliable partner, noting that bilateral cooperation between Tajikistan and South Korea has significantly grown over the past decades.

He highlighted that Korean investments in Tajik projects have totaled over $73 million during this period.

The minister emphasized the importance of expanding cooperation within existing KOICA projects and proposed several new investment and infrastructure initiatives, including:

  • Establishment of a digital service center under the ministry;
  • Construction of solar power plants in remote areas;
  • Development of modern greenhouses;
  • Irrigation management and riverbank reinforcement;
  • Creation of a technical and scientific training center for the textile industry;
  • Launch of a joint industrial park in free economic zones;
  • Development of export logistics and scientific research.

Both sides reportedly agreed to continue regular dialogue to monitor joint projects and further strengthen economic cooperation.

According to the Agency for Statistics under the President of Tajikistan’s, the bilateral trade between the countries last year valued at US$148 million, a 27.5-percent increase compared to 2023.  Nearly all trade volume last year consisted of imports from South Korea.
