Many Tajik labor migrants find themselves in irregular situations because of their poor legal knowledge

DUSAHNBE, February 13, Asia-Plus – Many of Tajik labor migrants find themselves in irregular situations and are victims of abuse and exploitation because of their poor knowledge of employment realities and legal requirements, Yuri Novikov, representative of the Russian Federal Migration Service in Tajikistan, remarked in an interview with Asia-Plus commenting on a statement by Tajikistan’s Democratic Party over state of Tajik labor migrants abroad.    

“Only 10 percent of Tajik labor migrants staying in the Russian Federation have a legal status, Mr. Novikov said, noting that compared to 2004 a number of Tajik migrants deported for not fulfilling legal requirements last year reduced and amounted to 9,000 people against 18,000 deported in 2004.    

“Despite all this, labor migrants make considerable contribution to development of economies of
