QURGHON TEPPA, March 6, Asia-Plus – In 2005, 228 criminal proceedings were brought for consideration into the Khatlon military court, Temurjon Boyev, chairman of the court of the Khatlon military garrison, has remarked at a meeting with servicemen of Panj border unit.

According to him, the court already passed verdicts on 182 of these proceedings, four other cases were suspended and 19 cases moved to other courts.  “192 servicemen stood on trials on these cases; of them, 89 were sentenced to various terms of imprisonment and one person was fined 70 Somonis,” the judge said.

Boyev also noted that they last year sent 72 individual orders to the military units to remove shortcomings but commanders of some military units have not reacted to those orders and have not informed the court of taken measures.  “Compared to 2004, a number of crimes committed by border guards increased: last year, 113 crimes committed by border guards were reported,” Temurjon Boyev said.

The judge also called on servicemen to fight “dedovshchina,” the often brutal hazing of new recruits by older soldiers.
