, March 27, Asia-Plus – The Government of the
Russian Federation
has made to the United Nations World Food Program donation in a form of foodstuffs worth US$6 million, which will be sent to support the humanitarian aid and rehabilitation program in
Tajikistan
.
According to information from the WFP Dushanbe Office, the funds will be used for purchasing of 13,350 tons of vitamin-enriched wheat flour in the
Russian Federation
(three shipments in total) and supply of it to
Tajikistan
.
The first shipment including 3,000 tons of flour is expected to arrive in
Tajikistan
in early April. Of this shipment, 1,000 tons will be sent to Khujand.
This aid will be provided to dozens thousand of people living in the most vulnerable in terms of provision with foods regions of
Tajikistan
.
Despite commercial import and international aid access to foodstuffs remains one of the main problems in
Tajikistan
, especially for 10 percent (some 350,000 people) of households in rural areas.
At present the donors of the UN WFP in Tajikistan are: the United States – US$24.7 million; Japan – US$6.1 million; Russia – US$6 million; the Netherlands – US$3.3 million; Germany – US$923,000; Sweden – US$935,000, Denmark – US$891,000; Ireland – US$744,000, Canada – US$607,000, Switzerland – US$400,000, Luxemburg – US$265,000 and Turkey – US$150,000.
