DUSHANBE, July 30, 2010, Asia-Plus — Open joint-stock company, Sangtudinskaya GES-1, which operates the Sangtuda-1 hydroelectric power plant (HPP) on the Vakhsh River, intends to build a new medium-sized hydropower plant in Tajikistan, the Sangtudinskaya GES-1 director general Vladimir Belov announced at a briefing in Dushanbe on July 30.
According to him, the company plans to build the station one of three internal rivers in Tajikistan, Obi Khingob, Kofarnihon, or Fondaryo. “The project will not be funded from the Russian budget,” said Belov, “To construct this plant Sangtudinskaya GES-1 is expected to take loans from international financial institutions.”
He noted that the station would be property of Sangtudinskaya GES-1. However, Belov added that since the project is situated in Tajikistan the Government of Tajikistan will also participate in the project. He expressed hope that the construction of the new medium-sized power plant will begin next year.
“The rated capacity of this station will be 100-150 MW,” said the director general, “It is quite an optimal capacity that allows constructing the plant in acceptable term – two or three years.” A total cost of the project may be some 150 million U.S. dollars.
We will recall that Russian-Tajik OJSC Sangtudinskaya GES-1 was established to complete the construction of the Santuda-1 power plant. Russia’s Inter RAO YeES and the Ministry of Energy and Industries of Tajikistan signed an agreement on the establishment of the company in Dushanbe on February 16, 2005. Tajikistan owns 15.97 percent of the shares and a number of Russian companies assume the 84.03% ownership interest in Sangtudinskaya GES-1.
