DUSHANBE, April 15, 2010, Asia-Plus — The Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower chamber of parliament) yesterday passed a resolution on the establishment of the Interim Commission on Ecology within the Majlisi Namoyandagon.
The commission consists of fifteen MPs and MP Rustam Latipov was elected to head it.
Speaking at the sitting, the Majlisi Namoyandagon speaker Shukurjon Zuhurov noted that the commission was dedicated to deal with issues related to ensuring the environmental security of Tajikistan. According to him, the commission will coordinate activities of and interaction between the parliament’s lower house and governmental structures for environmental protection. “Creation of this commission is not aimed against other countries,” the speaker stressed.
The member of the new commission, MP Muhiddin Kabiri, noted that the commission’s activity should not duplicate work of the Majlisi Namoyandagon committee on social issues, health and ecology. “This commission should carry out work among the population, media and international organizations active in the country on arising ecological issues.”
He called on members of the commission to decisively uphold Tajikistan’s in case of emergence of regional environmental contradictions. “We have already received questions from some countries and we must give them well-grounded answers.”
Another member of the ecology commission, MP Shodi Shabdolov, considers that the establishment of the commission was a well-timed and important step. “Tajik parliament has passed and ratified many documents on improvement of the environment and this commission should control implementation of these documents,” Shabdolov said.
