DUSHANBE, April 7, 2010, Asia-Plus — Like other countries of the world, Tajikistan is marking World Health Day today.
According to the Ministry of Health (MoH), they organize a mass campaign on buying shares in open joint-stock company (OJSC) Roghun on this occasion. Some 500 people, including head of medical centers, hospital head physicians and ordinary medical workers, are expected to take part in this campaign, the source at a MoH said.
In the meantime, the World Health Organization (WHO) country office in Tajikistan organizes an event dedicated to the World Health Day at the Poytakht Center in Dushanbe today. Representatives of international organizations active in the country are taking part in the event. A number of known Tajik music groups are participating in the cultural program of the event, the source said.
Besides, Mr. Santino Severoni, WHO Representative in Tajikistan, and Mr. Azam Mirzoyev, deputy health Minister of Tajikistan, will give a news conference.
World Health Day is celebrated every year on April 7, under the sponsorship of the World Health Organization (WHO). In 1948, the World Health Organization held the First World Health Assembly. The Assembly decided to celebrate April 7 of each year, with effect from 1950, as the World Health Day. The World Health Day is celebrated to create “awareness of a specific health theme to highlight a priority area of concern for the World Health Organization (WHO)”. Activities – related to that particular theme and the resources provided – continue beyond April 7, that is, the designated day for celebrating the World Health Day.
World Health Day 2010 focuses on urbanization and health. With the campaign “1000 cities – 1000 lives”, events are organized worldwide calling on cities to open up streets for health activities. Stories of urban health champions will be gathered to illustrate what people are doing to improve health in their cities.
