DUSHANBE, February 9, 2010, Asia-Plus  — A 33-year-old resident of Khatlon’s Jilikul district, Mahmadsaid Mirzoyev, who reportedly underwent training at terrorist camps in Afghanistan, has been sentenced to eight years in prison.

The Supreme Court on February 4 ruled that Mahmadsaid Mirzoyev be given a jail term of eight years and that he will serve it in a high-security penal colony.  The sentence followed his conviction of the charge of organization of criminal grouping (Article 187 of Tajikistan’s Penal Code).

The Supreme Court judge Abuldhakim Mirzoyev told Asia-Plus that all confederates of Mahmadsaid Mirzoyev had been detained and convicted in the 1990s already.  “According to the case materials, all this time, Mahamdaid Mirzoyev was in the neighboring country and underwent terrorist training at camps of the Al-Qaeda terrorist network and then returned home, where he was arrested shortly after return.”

According to the Supreme Court, 10 organizations have been banned in Tajikistan as extremist on the basis of a suit filed by the Prosecutor-General’s Office.  The list includes  Al-Qaeda, the Islamic Movement of Turkestan, Taliban, Ikhwan ul-Muslimin (The Muslim Brothers), Jamaati Tabligh, Sozmoni Tablighot, Tojikistoni Ozod (Free Tajikistan), etc.

In 2009, 37 people were convicted in Tajikistan on the charge of being member of one or another extremist organization.
