DUSHANBE, February 11, 2009, Asia-Plus — President Emomali Rahmon, who is currently in Brussels on an official visit to the European Union institutions, yesterday met the European Parliament”s Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Mr. Jacek Saryusz-Wolski, according to presidential press service.
They discussed a broad range of issues related to cooperation between Tajikistan and the European Union.
Yesterday, President Rahmon also made speech at the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee and drew attention of those present to problems existing in the Central Asian region and Afghanistan that required solution. He, in particular, noted that if threats and challenges facing the region were not addressed properly and if the reliable barrier was not put on their way from Afghanistan, the European countries would have to fight those threats and challenges in their own territories that required considerable forces and funds, the press service said.
During the meeting, it was noted that economic and technical assistance provided to Tajikistan by the European Union, which along with other countries of the world has also been faced with the financial crisis, was call of the times.
