DUSHANBE, December 15, 2009, Asia-Plus — President Emomali Rahmon yesterday signed a decree designating elections to the parliament (Majlisi Oli) and local legislatures (Majlis), according to presidential press service.
Under the decree, the election of deputies of the Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower chamber of parliament) and members of legislatures (Majlis) of Gorno Badakhshan, provinces, City of Dushanbe, cities and districts will take place on February 28, 2010.
The election of members of the Majlisi Milli (Tajikistan’s upper chamber of parliament) will be held on March 25, 2010.
The head of state also sent a list of new members of the Central Commission for Elections and Referenda (CCER) for confirmation to the Majlisi Namoyandagon.
Under the country’s Constitution, the Majlisi Namoyandagon forms the Central Commission for Elections and Referendums, elects and recalls chairman, deputy chairman and members of it upon the recommendation of the President.
Yesterday, President Rahmon also met with persons, nominated to the CCER and called on them to organize free and transparent elections in accordance with the country’s legislation.
