KULOB, December 14, 2009, Asia-Plus  — Dollar remittances sent by labor migrants to banks in Khatlon’s Kulob zone in January-November 2009 have amounted to 44,481,243 dollars, which is US$42 million fewer than in he same period of last year, Abdukarim Nematov, the head of the branch of the National Bank of Tajikistan (NBT) in Kulob, said in an interview with Asia-Plus.

“In the meantime, they have remitted 700.607 million Russian rubles to Kulob banks over the report period, which is nearly two times more than in January-November 2008,” Nematov said, noting that negative effect of the global financial crisis on labor migrants’ earnings has continued through the year.

According to him, the Euro remittances from labor migrants have also increased to a certain extent over the same eleven-month period.  “In January-November 2009, labor migrants have remitted some 76,000 euros to banks in the area, while during the whole year of 2008, they remitted 63,000 euros to local banks,” Nematov noted.
