In the Uzbek city of Denau (Surkhandarya region), a tragic incident occurred during a sports tournament in kurash — an ancient form of national wrestling — resulting in the death of a person.
The event took place on May 9 at the stadium of the local medical college, Fergana news agency writes.
During the tournament, the son of the famous wrestler Nizomiddin Chutboyev — Ayubkhon Khurramov — defeated his opponent Bustanbek Zhabborov. After the defeat, his brother, Doston Zhabborov, couldn’t control his emotions and, according to media reports, attacked the winner’s father. He approached him from behind and inflicted several stab wounds.
The injured was urgently taken to the district hospital, but he could not be saved — he died in the intensive care unit.
The Denau district prosecutor’s office has instituted criminal proceedings under the article of intentional murder committed out of hooligan motives. The suspect has been detained. It is reported that he had a previous criminal record and was known in the area for his aggressive behavior.
It is noted that this is already the second high-profile case of violence in Denau in recent weeks: on April 27, another attack occurred in the city, resulting in a group of men beating a local resident to death on the street; four people were detained in connection with the case.
Kurash is an ancient upright jacket wrestling style originating from Central Asia, particularly Uzbekistan, where practitioners (kurashchilar) wear green and blue jackets and use towels to grab opponents. Its primary goal is to throw the opponent onto their back. It features upright, standing-only combat with no ground wrestling allowed.
