DUSHANBE, July 3, 2009, Asia-Plus  — The UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund) Country Office in Tajikistan is organizing a concert at Vefa-center in Dushanbe today evening.

Known Tajik music group Sarez, dancing group Gulrez as well as the winner of the competition “2008 Five Stars Intervision” Tahmina Niyozova and Nigina Hamroqulova are participating in the concert dedicated to World Population Day, the 15th anniversary of International Conference on Population and the 40th anniversary of the UNFPA.

World Population Day is an annual event, observed on July 11, which seeks to raise awareness of global population issues.  The event was established by the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Program in 1989.  It was inspired by the public interest in Five Billion Day on July 11, 1987, approximately the date on which the world”s population reached five billion people.

The world population on the 20th anniversary of Five Billion Day, July 11, 2007, was estimated to have been 6,727,551,263.

UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, is an international development agency that promotes the right of every woman, man and child to enjoy a life of health and equal opportunity.  UNFPA supports countries in using population data for policies and programs to reduce poverty and to ensure that every pregnancy is wanted, every birth is safe, every young person is free of HIV/AIDS, and every girl and woman is treated with dignity and respect.
