DUSHANBE, June 5, 2009, Asia-Plus  — Foreign Minister Harmokhon Zarifi received Russian Ambassador to Tajikistan Yuri Popov on June 3, according to the MFA information department.

The meeting was held at request of Tajik minister and the two discuss state and prospects of further expansion of bilateral cooperation between Tajikistan and Russia.

Zarifi and Popov also discussed the forthcoming working visit of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev to Tajikistan and his participation in an official ceremony of opening of the Russian-built hydropower plant Sangtuda-1.

They also touched upon issues related to the upcoming meeting of heads of state of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member states that will be held in Yekaterinburg, Russia this month.

During his stay in Yekaterinburg, President Emomali Rahmon intends to meet with heads of Tajik Diasporas there and Tajik students studying at universities in Russia’s Ural region.  Tajik president will also take part in a ceremony of opening of Tajik General Consulate in Yekaterinburg.

In this connection, Zarifi asked Popov to provide assistance with holding of those events.

For his part, Ambassador Popov confirmed his readiness to provide assistance with holding of the mentioned events at high organizing level.

The sides also discussed some other issues being of mutual interest, the MFA information department said.
