DUSHANBE, January 20, 2009, Asia-Plus  — Specialists from the Center for Strategic Studies consider that together with terrorism and drug trafficking the ongoing financial crisis poses a serious threat to the country’s national security and economy, head of the Center fro Strategic Studies remarked at a press service in Dushanbe on January 19.

According to him, the financial crisis has resulted in prices of Tajikistan’s exports considerably decreasing that, in turn, has led to reduction in the volume of currency receipts of volumes.  Moreover, increase in the unemployment level in connection with return of Tajik labor migrants that lost work abroad will inevitably create new difficulties, Tajik pundit said.

“To avoid social crisis in the country it is necessary to develop a simplified mechanism of distribution of lands as well as removal of obstacles on the way of development of trade,” said Sharipov, “Our migrant workers return with certain sums of money and if to create necessary conditions these funds could be used in the real sector of economy.  They could be invested in launching small enterprises in the trade and agrarian sectors.”

Sharipov further added that the Center experts expect some 30 percent of Tajik migrants, which is some 200,000 people, to return home following the financial crisis.

According to figures provided by the State Committee for Statistics, some 50,000 unemployed have been officially registered in the country so far.
