Tajik FM holds a number of bilateral meetings in Geneva

DUSHANBE, March 31, 2011, Asia-Plus — On Wednesday March 30, Tajik Foreign Minister Hamrokhon Zarifi delivered a statement on water-and-energy capacities of Tajikistan and a number of projects for construction of hydropower plants and electricity transmission lines at the 64th session of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) in Geneva, according the Tajik MFA information department.

On sidelines of the session, Zarifi held talks with Mr. Jan Kubis, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe.  Zarifi briefed Kubis on preparations made by Tajikistan for joining the World Trade Organization (WTO), the current situation in Tajikistan and the Central Asian region, water-and-energy problems as well as projects for construction of hydropower facilities in Tajikistan.

Tajik minister also shared his views on the situation in Kyrgyzstan and Afghanistan as well as negotiations with Russia on border cooperation issues.

In Geneva, Zarifi also met with the WTO deputy director general Alejandro Jara.  In the course of the talks, Zarifi said that Tajikistan has been taking all necessary steps to fulfill all conditions and specifications required at that stage.

Zarifi’s talks with Sergey Orjonikidze, Director-General of the United Nations Office in Geneva, focused on issues related to reforming the UN Security Council, the situation in Afghanistan and Kyrgyzstan as well as the latest developments in a number of Arab countries, the source said.
