WIPO to help Tajikistan develop intellectual property services

Date:

DUSHANBE, October 4, 2011, Asia-Plus — Mr. Salohiddin Nasreddinov, Tajik Ambassador to Switzerland also Permanent Representative of Tajikistan to the United Nations Office in Geneva, is representing Tajikistan at the Forty-Ninth Series of Meetings of the Assemblies of the Member States of WIPO (the Assemblies) being held at the International Conference Center Geneva (CICG) from September 26 to October 5, 2011, the Tajik MFA information department reports.

At the end of last week, Nasreddinov held talks with the WIPO Director-General Francis Gurry.  The talks reportedly resulted in signing of an agreement on cooperation between the National Patent and Invention Information Center at Tajikistan’s Ministry of Economic Development and Trade (MEDT) and the WIPO on development of intellectual property services.

The agreement, in particular, provides for improvement of the system of rendering services on registration of the intellectual property rights and associated services aimed at promoting economic and social development of Tajikistan, the source added.

Tajikistan joined the World Intellectual Property Organizations in December 1991 and it is now signatory to 14 international agreements and treaties on protection of intellectual property.

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is one of the 16 specialized agencies of the United Nations.  WIPO was created in 1967 “to encourage creative activity, to promote the protection of intellectual property throughout the world.”  WIPO currently has 184 member states, administers 24 international treaties, and is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.  183 of the UN Members as well as the Holy See are Members of WIPO.

WIPO was formally created by the Convention Establishing the World Intellectual Property Organization, which entered into force on April 26, 1970. Under Article 3 of this Convention, WIPO seeks to “promote the protection of intellectual property throughout the world.”  WIPO became a specialized agency of the UN in 1974.

The WIPO main policy and decision making bodies are the WIPO General Assembly and the WIPO Coordination Committee.  Nineteen assemblies and other bodies of the Member States of WIPO and of the Unions administered by WIPO, traditionally meet in ordinary or extraordinary session at the end of September.  These meetings bring together WIPO’s 184 member nations, allowing them to take stock of the progress in the Organization’s work and to discuss future policy directions.
