DUSHANBE, December 12, 2008, Asia-Plus  — The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Tajikistan and the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade (MoEDT) in the framework of the joint project, Local/Regional Potential on Working Out and Monitoring of Development Programs and Budgeting, are conducting Round Table on “2008 Progress and Tasks for 2009” today.

The project manager Mirzo Olimov said that the meeting would sum up the results of work carried out in 2008 and discuss tasks for 2009.

According to him, the project aims to promote development of regions and provides for support for the public sector at local level “to improve the existing processes of working out development programs and financing of them.”

“The project is also aimed to involve local interested sides in the process of working out and executing the development programs, create opportunities for the government and civil society to forecast development on the basis of concerted priorities,” said the project manager, “A special attention is paid to interconnecting local development processes with such documents of nationwide significance as Tajikistan’s Poverty Reduction Strategy for 2007-2015 and Tajikistan’s National Development Strategy for the period to 2015.”

“The final goal of the project is to strengthen management capacities through partnership with governmental institutions on reforming processes of working out and implementing the development programs and budgeting at regional and district levels,” Olimov noted.

He added that the project covered 15 pilot districts: Isfara; Konibodom; Ayni; Panjaknet; Kuhistoni Mastchoh; Nourobod; Jirgatol; Tojikobod; Vahdat; Tursunzoda; Shuroobod; Baljuvon; Khovaling; Kulob; and Rumi.

Representatives of the Center for Strategic Studies, Public Servants Advanced Training Institute, State Committee for Statistics, a number of international organizations active in Tajikistan, as well as local authorities of Sughd and Khatlon provinces and the targeted districts are expected to attend the meeting, Olimov said.
